Training Your Racing Pigeons

At the age of 3 or 4 weeks old, your young racing pigeons should be weaned from their parents. This is when the young pigeons’ bodies are totally covered with small feathers but their tail feathers and wing flights are not fully developed. Young pigeons reach the full length of their tail feathers and wing flights after about 6 or 9 weeks of age.

At six to seven weeks old, It is fine for the young pigeons to be supplied with light feeding portion in the morning. At this developmental stage, following strict feeding system is critical for their growth and development. For young pigeons, this  strict feeding routine must be followed throughout the racing season.

Once your young racing pigeons are accustomed to the 2 meals per day feeding schedule, it is time to teach them how to enter the loft. You begin by training the young birds to come to the pigeon loft when called for. It is essential that the pigeons that return to the loft last during the initial training should be among those that come into the loft first on the next day of training. When training your racing pigeons you should always have fresh feed and clean water prior to the arrival of your racers.

You are trying to get these young racers accustome to your chosen call which can be a whistle or a clanking of a feed can while the food is being given to them. After several training, coming back to the loft become a routine for the young birds. With the right training technique, young racing pigeons automatically learned to enter the loft at a fast pace for the rest of their lives.

Young pigeons’ racing season usually begins in the beginning or middle of summer. It depends on where you are located within the world. Young birds start training for the race at about 14 weeks. Before that they should be exercising twice daily at home. Many fanciers believed that if the pigeons are trained too early,  may suffer training fatigue and will not have sufficient energy and drive during the start of the season. You begin by training your young racing pigeons to get accustomed to the basket. Teach them to come to the basket and to come out of the basket. The pigeons are trained to be skilled at finding their way back home. It is very essential for them to be trained to find the shortest way back home.

When pigeons are released outside, it is natural for them to fly freely. Your young racing pigeons should be exercised at least twice daily. As for the older racing pigeons, they fly around the home much less. The main goal of training these adult racing pigeons is to maximize their racing performance.

"Training Tosses will build up stamina and endurance"

Training tosses are conducted to train your racing pigeons on thier ability to navigate thier way home from long distanaces. It also builds their stamina and endurance.

The best way to train them is to gradually build up flying distance from the loft. This is done by starting off a few miles away from the loft and then build it up the distance that they are flying back home to the loft. The distance that you want to train them is all up to your prefference. But remember they must be ready to return home from great distances by the time the season begins.

Thier are lots of information out thier on how to train your racers but it's really up to you. Do some research, ask a racing pigeon fancier for advice, put together some strategy and always try different approaches to this sport.

Remember to document all that you do that way you will know what type of methods works and which one's need improving. Read up and learning through trail and error will make you a better racing pigeon fancier.
